Works + Nights
In the months leading up to my sixtieth birthday, I made sixty drawings and recorded a two-word phrase for each image. On January 27, 2026, I tore or cut each collage into four pieces using a blade or scissors. After, I translated the word pairings into gestures that became the score for a performance for camera that was filmed in the summer of 2026. The performance for video includes projections of the original collage drawings, fragments of the destroyed works, and objects and movements inspired by the written phrases.
Works + Nights considers process, ritual, impermanence, and translation through drawing, performance, and video. The acts of destruction and regeneration in this project were inspired by the writer Barbara Molinard (1921-1986) who compulsively wrote and destroyed her work. The title Works + Nights is borrowed from Alejandra Pizarnik.
