Scrying Moon, performed July 20th at Hansel Gallery, Philosophical Research Society
Scrying Moon was an enactment of small gestures drawing upon divination practices, mythology of the moon, and symbology of the underworld. This private ritual was inspired by the Sumerian mythological poem Descent of Inanna, and the figure of Ereshkigal. While Inanna journeys in a cycle between death and rebirth, her sister Ereshkigal remains in darkness as ruler of the land of the dead. In her underworld domain, Ereshkigal is hidden, but her cloak of invisibility gives her awesome insights as a seer and guardian of the night. The work celebrates the legacy of women who are submerged in our cultural history and evokes female wisdom embodied in the figure of the crone.
